Accountability – It Starts with Me!

coffee-talkIt’s a funny thing, accountability. Ask almost anyone if they hold themselves accountable and you’ll receive one the several replies, ‘Of course’, ’Sure’, ‘I do but no one else seems to’

Let’s be correct and accurate if we’re talking about accountability. Accountability starts with me. Let’s say what we mean, and hold ourselves accountable for saying what we mean.

Unfortunately, it’s relatively common to find some outside source to blame for our circumstances.

People can regularly be heard to claim:

  • ‘It was Jonny.’
  • It wasn’t my idea’
  • We could sell more if we had xyz.’
  • ‘My manager interferes too much’
  • ‘My employees just stand around chance they get’
  • It’s Not My Fault!’
  • It’s not my job’
  • ‘I didn’t know about that!’
  • ‘My car broke down on the way!’
  • ‘The MRT train broke down!’

And some more we may hear in the investment arena:

  • ‘I would not have lost money if you’ve hadn’t sold me the investment.’
  • I lost money because of the bloody Lehman Brothers collapse! Things would have been different.’
  • ‘It was such a bad property.’
  • I lost money and you’ve to refund me back! You said I’m going to make money and it turn out otherwise.’

Sound familiar? This is victim thinking – inevitably leading to “victim statements”.

What will any of those statements do to solve the problem?

Nothing!

How often do we look inside and ask ourselves “What could I’ve done to make that situation better or prevented it getting to such a problem stage/issue?”

It’s so much easier to ‘blame’ than trying to work out a solution.

E.g.: ‘It was such a bad property!’ There’s no such thing as a bad property. Only a bad investor!

How do we stop this cycle of non-accountability, even with ourselves?

Identify those things we can influence, and what we can do to affect a situation, rather try and avoid the accountability we should all own!
